They want to trade in one of the Hyundai SUVs we have for it, and I'm wondering if there's anything I should look out for, OppoPinions, etc. They see like fine vehicles and well-regarded by the Oppo community, but when doing research I found out that windshield cracks are common for the Forrester, and that there are complaints of wind noise specifically from the front passenger door on the Outback?

the only complaints I have for them are: the autos before the CVT really, DESPERATELY needed more gears. 4 wasnt enough.

the engines I think are under powered for them. for some the speed is more then ok.

The Outback is definitely a more comfortable and nicer place to sit. They really stepped up their interior game.

The CVT is really the only issue I have. Steering may be a touch too light for my tastes but if they do a lot of city driving it shouldn't be an issue. They might feel underpowered but they do get going quickly. Don't know about these but on the Impreza you can't really see anything ahead of the windshield so you need to know where the nose of your car is when parking. It takes a bit to get used to but they're good and comfortable vehicles. Great in the snow too.

Which model year/generation? Which trim levels/options? New or used?

I have a 2009 Forester 2.5X Limited (been in the family since new, now mine), and it's been great. My parents have a 2012 Outback 3.6R Limited and a 2015 Forester 2.5i Limited. The Outback has been great as well. I'm sure the 2015 Forester will also prove to be great long term, but they have only had it 3 months (so far, so good).

Our family has a 2005 Outback XT and it's a pretty average car. In the dry it isn't very good to drive, but it's more fun in the snow. The reason I'm mentioning this is because that car has a 250 hp turbo four and the most powerful new one, 10 years later, has a 250 hp six. We live in the mountains, so turbo engines produce more power than naturally aspirated engines . Plus, the new ones are heavier than ours. That means the new ones are slower. We are looking for a replacement for it as well, but there is no way we would get a new one if it is slower. My mom will probably get a V60 Cross Country instead.

the new outback rocks. such a nice car to be driven around in. hella space. not my choice because of CVT though...
